Kikki Rant: Dear Susan Sarandon, I’m Not “Voting with My Vagina” Either.

Dear Susan Sarandon,

Unlike you, when I vote on Tuesday, I will not be voting for Jill Stein. However, when I vote for Hillary Clinton, I also won’t be “voting with my vagina” any more than you will be. I will be voting with my brain; my research of Hillary’s track record* and my intuition that in spite of her being a cunning politician** and a flawed human, she is also a moral person. Yes she has used poor judgement and has made decisions that I do not support, but I continue to believe she is fully qualified to build and improve upon the accomplishments of the Obama administration.

Sure the prospect of a woman as U.S. President is THRILLING, but lady parts or not, if I did not believe in Hillary’s ability to competently serve as our President, then I would not be supporting her. Well, actually I would be supporting her, because the only realistic alternative is Donald Trump and his wall-building, “pussy-grabbing,” racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-islamist rhetoric.

No, Jill Stein is not a realistic (or viable) alternative. Voting for her is not standing up against the lesser of two evils. Jill Stein is just a dangerous distraction.***

To those of you who think voting for Candidate Stein is taking a stand, listen up:

megaphone

When you vote for Jill Stein on Tuesday, you will only be serving up a vote to Donald Trump and the right-wing conservatives who would like to see nothing more than the rights to our own lady parts revoked. So Dear Susan Sarandon, you may as well pop in a Tic-Tac and kiss your vagina goodbye.

You see, we live in the United States, which – whether you agree with it or not – functions as a two-party system. And as my fairly well-read**** understanding of our two-party system tells me, a 3rd party candidate will not be elected president in a two-party system (hint: electoral votes). Now I realize many of you would argue that a multi-party system makes for a stronger democracy, and that if more people came out to vote for 3rd party candidates, then perhaps we’d ultimately change the system. Perhaps you’re right, but at what cost in the meantime (hint: Trump)?

When I walk down the street, click on a headline or fall into the Facebook vortex, I come across many reasonable people who are writhing in frustration at feeling they are being bullied into choosing a candidate who does not fully represent their interests. That is fair and I respect that, but guess what:

megaphoneYou DO have more than two choices. You can use the passion and frustration you’re feeling now to ensure your needs are represented in the “downstream” elections – those who will represent you at the federal level (hint: The House and the Senate). You want your voice to be heard? You want to effect real change? Don’t vote for Jill Stein. Don’t vote for Gary Johnson. Don’t move to Canada. Get up and rock your local vote.*****

Well, I’m glad I got that out. I ain’t sorry.

**Those of you who refute a candidate for being “too political,” don’t understand political science and how shit gets done. If you want your representatives to effect the change you demand, then you better hope they’re beyond adept at navigating the political system.

*** The radical left accomplished its goal not by logical argument but by meaningless rhetoric and the free association of ideas, designed to undermine our confidence in all we believe in. The intent is to discredit the objectivity of our judgements, the truth of all statements, even the meaning of language and logic itself. -Samuel Freman

****By well-read, I mean I paid attention in elementary school, high school and Poli Sci 101, Oh, and also, the Internet: U.S. Two Party System. Also, this, which I know is a biased source, but it’s based on logic and facts: http://observer.com/2016/07/why-third-party-candidates-cant-win/

*****This actually goes for all of us, particularly if the unthinkable happens and we wake up Wednesday morning to a “President Trump” reality.
